Advent Reading for Tuesday, Week 4 (December 20, 2022)

The Season of Advent prepares us for Christ's coming--both on Christmas Day and when we comes again in glory.  This year, we will spend each week exploring a different way we can prepare ourselves.  The post for each day will include a scripture, a song, a few brief questions to reflect upon, and a prayer.

Week 4 Reminder

As we enter into the 4th week of Advent, the time has come to proclaim that our Savior is about to arrive.  The Hebrew and Greek words for "proclaim"  give us a variety of ways to share the Good News.  For a more in-depth introduction to the idea of proclamation, please refer back to our post for Sunday, Dec. 18.

Scripture

Micah 5:2-5a

2 But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah,
who are one of the little clans of Judah,
from you shall come forth for me
one who is to rule in Israel,
whose origin is from of old,
    from ancient days.
Therefore he shall give them up until the time
    when she who is in labor has brought forth;
then the rest of his kindred shall return
    to the people of Israel.
And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord,
in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God.
And they shall live secure, for now he shall be great
to the ends of the earth,
and he shall be the one of peace.

Questions

Micah promises that the humble town of Bethlehem will have an important role in fulfilling God's plans for the people's salvation.

  • Can you think of people, places, or events that seemed small at first but that actually play a large part in God's plans?
  •  How might telling the story of Bethlehem and other such "small fish" share the Good News?
  • What small or humble positions do you occupy, and what role may you play in God's plans?

Prayer

Lord, help us proclaim the Good News that even the smallest and most humble of your children have big parts to play in your plans for the world's salvation.  Amen.
