Advent Reading for Monday, Week 4 (Decembr 19, 2022)

The Season of Advent prepares us for Christ's coming--both on Christmas Day and when we comes again in glory.  This year, we will spend each week exploring a different way we can prepare ourselves.  The post for each day will include a scripture, a song, a few brief questions to reflect upon, and a prayer.

Week 4 Introduction

As we enter into the 4th week of Advent, the time has come to proclaim that our Savior is about to arrive.  The Hebrew and Greek words for "proclaim"  give us a variety of ways to share the Good News.  For a more in-depth introduction to the idea of proclamation, please refer back to our post for Sunday, Dec. 18.

Scripture

Psalm 89:1-4, 19-26

You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one;
    I have sworn to my servant David:
‘I will establish your descendants forever
    and build your throne for all generations.’ ” Selah

 19 Then you spoke in a vision to your faithful one and said,
    “I have set the crown on one who is mighty;
    I have exalted one chosen from the people.
20 I have found my servant David;
    with my holy oil I have anointed him;
21 my hand shall always remain with him;
    my arm also shall strengthen him.
22 The enemy shall not outwit him;
    the wicked shall not humble him.
23 I will crush his foes before him
    and strike down those who hate him.
24 My faithfulness and steadfast love shall be with him,
    and in my name his horn shall be exalted.
25 I will set his hand on the sea
    and his right hand on the rivers.
26 He shall cry to me, ‘You are my Father,
    my God, and the Rock of my salvation!’

Questions

The psalmist proclaims that God's faithfulness and love shall stay with David and his descendants forever. .

  • How does the reminder that God has already anointed David and his descendants help you celebrate God's faithfulness?
  • How does the way the psalmist describes the blessings that David shall receive  apply to the way we talk about Jesus?
  • If you--like the psalmist-- were to write a song that celebrates God's promise to be faithful to us forever,what would the lyrics say?  What images or language would help people understand your proclamation?

Prayer

Lord, help us proclaim the Good News of your steadfast love for your people.  Amen.
