Advent Reading for Saturday, Week 3 (December 17, 2022)

The Season of Advent prepares us for Christ's coming--both on Christmas Day and when we comes again in glory.  This year, we will spend each week exploring a different way we can prepare ourselves.  The post for each day will include a scripture, a song, a few brief questions to reflect upon, and a prayer.

Week 3 Reminder

The 3rd Sunday of Advent is often referred to as Gaudete Sunday (or Joy Sunday).  Gaudete is the Latin word for "rejoice."  From a theological perspective, to rejoice doesn't mean pretending to be happy. For a longer exploration of joy, refer back to the reading, for Sunday, Dec. 4.

Scripture

1 Thessalonians 5:16-24

16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies, 21 but test everything; hold fast to what is good; 22 abstain from every form of evil.

23 May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely, and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this. (NRSVUE)

Questions

Paul tells us that no matter what happens, we are to rejoice always and pray without ceasing.

  • When do you find it difficult to rejoice in God's promises?
  • What life is hard and happiness seems far away, what helps you turn to God in prayer and rejoice in Christ's faithfulness (ex: talking to family, walking in nature)

Prayer

Christ, help me keep rejoicing in God's promises and your faithfulness.  Amen.
