Advent Reading for Saturday, Week 1 (12/3/22)

The Season of Advent prepares us for Christ's coming--both on Christmas Day and when we comes again in glory.  This year, we will spend each week exploring a different way we can prepare ourselves.  The post for each day will include a scripture, a song, a few brief questions to reflect upon, and a prayer  Week 1 is about Keeping Watch.

Week 1 Reminder

This week, our readings focus on "Keeping Watch."  For a longer introduction to what keeping watch entails, please refer to Sunday's post.

Scripture

Romans 13:11-14

11 Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is already the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; 12 the night is far gone; the day is near. Let us then throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; 13 let us walk decently as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in illicit sex and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. 14 Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.  (NRSVUE)

Hymn

Questions

For Paul, part of being ready means being dressed in the right moral and spiritual “clothes.”

  • As the Day of the Lord grows nearer, what works of darkness would Paul advise you (or the world) to take off?
  • What do you wish to put on in their place?

Prayer

Christ, help us cast off the works of darkness and put on your armor of light as we prepare for your return.
