Advent Reading for Monday, Week 2 (December 5, 2022)

The Season of Advent prepares us for Christ's coming--both on Christmas Day and when we comes again in glory.  This year, we will spend each week exploring a different way we can prepare ourselves.  The post for each day will include a scripture, a song, a few brief questions to reflect upon, and a prayer.

Week 2 Reminder

This week, our readings focus on "Repentance."  The Hebrew word for "repent"  תשובה (teshuva) means to return or turn back.  It's Greek counterpart μετανοώ (metanoeó) means to change one's mind or purpose--particularly when that change is as a result of accepting God's will.  For a longer description of repentance, refer back to the reading, for Sunday, Dec. 4.

Scripture

Isaiah 2:1-5

The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

In days to come
    the mountain of the Lord’s house
shall be established as the highest of the mountains
    and shall be raised above the hills;
all the nations shall stream to it.
    Many peoples shall come and say,
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
    to the house of the God of Jacob,
that he may teach us his ways
    and that we may walk in his paths.”
For out of Zion shall go forth instruction
    and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
He shall judge between the nations
    and shall arbitrate for many peoples;
they shall beat their swords into plowshares
    and their spears into pruning hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation;
    neither shall they learn war any more.
O house of Jacob,
    come, let us walk
in the light of the Lord!

Questions

Despite all the sins Isaiah outlines in chapter 1, he spends part of Chapter 2 promising that God will forgives us of all of it if we repent and return to him.

  •  Lots of people struggle to believe that God could forgive them for their sins and help them change their ways.  Do you?
  • Why or why not?

Prayer

Christ,help me trust that when I repent of my sins, you forgive them and teach me to walk in God's paths.
