Advent Reading for Tuesday, Week 1 (11/29/22)

The Season of Advent helps us prepare for Christ's coming--both on Christmas Day and when we comes again in glory.  This year, we will spend each week exploring a different way we can prepare ourselves.  The post for each day will include a scripture, a song, a few brief questions to reflect upon, and a prayer  Week 1 is about Keeping Watch.

Week 1 Reminder

This week, our readings focus on "Keeping Watch."  For a longer introduction to what keeping watch entails, please refer to Sunday's post.

Scripture

Matthew 25:1-13

“Then the kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten young women took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.  Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and slept.

But at midnight there was a shout, ‘Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those young women got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise replied, ‘No! there will not be enough for you and for us; you had better go to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.’

10 And while they went to buy it, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him into the wedding banquet, and the door was shut. 11 Later the other young women came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ 12 But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I do not know you.’ 13 Keep awake, therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.   (NRSVUE)

Questions

The parable of the young women with the lamps tells us to keep ourselves mentally and spiritually  prepared for God’s return...no matter how long it takes.

  • Do you feel spiritually equipped with what you will need to celebrate Christ's return?
  • What would help you feel more prepared?
  • How might you stay awake and ready when it feels like Christ is never coming?

Prayer

LORD, help me stay awake and prepared for your arrival.
